Historical background

ROUSSILLON - PIERRE III

(1336-1387)

Pierre d'Aragon (1319-1387) is the son of Alfonso IV of Aragon (1327-1336). He succeeded his father in 1336 on the throne of Aragon under the name of Peter IV (III of Barcelona). From the beginning of his reign, he had to fight Jacques III of Majorca (1324-1343) in the county of Roussillon, which Pierre seized in 1343. He was married four times. In first weddings, he married Marie de Navarre (+1347), the daughter of Philippe d'Évreux, then Éléonore of Portugal (+1348), then Éléonore of Sicily (+1374), finally Sibylle de Tortia. His son Jean I of Aragon (1350-1395) succeeded him in 1387.
