Historical background

ROUSSILLON - COUNTY OF ROUSSILLON - LOUIS XIV

(1643-1659)

If Catalonia rose up and quickly joined the cause of Louis XIII, the places of Roussillon remained between the hands of the Spaniards. The French had to invest Collioure on April 13, 1642 and lay siege to Perpignan on April 23, which only fell on September 9. The capture of Barcelona made it possible to consolidate the French positions in Roussillon. The province was attached to the kingdom on November 7, 1659 by the Peace of the Pyrenees. This possession will be confirmed by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1668 and the Treaty of Nijmegen in 1679.
