ROUEN - CLERGY AND CHURCHES
Under the Ancien Régime, Rouen is one of the great cities of the kingdom, seen in the sixteenth century, as the second largest city in France after Paris, before gradually declining until the early nineteenth century, when it has the reputation of be dirty, and poorly constructed. Administrative and religious functions of the city are responsible for the stable base of its population and its influence.
