Commentary

Cf. Les Celtes, page 544..
Often classified among the “Gallic wheels,” this type of object seems to us closer to small wheels, like scale models. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between them, which explains its presence in this collection... The nature of the metal of these small wheels is uncertain; it is neither bronze nor potin, but more likely tin with various patinas depending on the duration and location of conservation. A comparable wheel dating from the 1st century was discovered on the oppidum of Trisov (Bohemia). Cf. The Celts, page 544.

Historical background

"ROUELLES"

(2nd - 1st century BC)

Over the past twenty years, roundabouts have become very fashionable objects among the "Celtisians" and we have seen first the objects appear, then the "scientific" reference works which made the amalgamation between pieces really "ancient and Celtic" and all the rest whose fluctuating chronology goes from the 1st century of our era to ....... our days. Specialized studies, comparisons of material, archaeological inventories remain to be carried out before being able to decide and separate what is ancient from what is not..
