This period is mainly marked by the start of the Second Punic War in 218 AC after the capture of Sagunto and Carthage's refusal to deliver Hannibal to the Romans. The latter crossed the Pyrenees and the Alps with nearly fifty thousand men. The Roman armies were crushed at Trebia in 218 AC, at Lake Trasimene in 217 AC and at Cannes in 216 AC In 212 AC, Hannibal took Taranto and rallied the towns of southern Italy. 211 AC marks a Roman victory at Capua..
