Obverse description : Tête imberbe janiforme des Dioscures (Castor et Pollux) ; grènetis perlé circulaire.

Reverse legend : ROMA EN CREUX À L'EXERGUE SUR UNE TABLETTE EN RELIEF.
Reverse description : Jupiter dans un quadrige galopant à droite, conduit par la Victoire tenant les rênes, brandissant un foudre de la main droite et tenant un sceptre long de la gauche ; grènetis linéaire circulaire.
Reverse translation : “Roma”, (Rome).

Commentary


Cet exemplaire présente la particularité d’avoir la légende de l’exergue en creux, placée sur une tablette en relief avec le A ouvert. Troué à 12 heures.

This period is mainly marked by the start of the Second Punic War in 218 AC after the capture of Sagunto and Carthage's refusal to deliver Hannibal to the Romans. The latter crossed the Pyrenees and the Alps with nearly fifty thousand men. The Roman armies were crushed at Trebia in 218 AC, at Lake Trasimene in 217 AC and at Cannes in 216 AC In 212 AC, Hannibal took Taranto and rallied the towns of southern Italy. 211 AC marks a Roman victory at Capua..
