Historical background

ROMAN REPUBLIC - ANONYMOUS

(179-169 BC)

The decade between 179 and 169 BC is mainly marked by external events. Gracchus ended the war in Spain in 179 BC by signing treaties with the Celtiberians. The same year the construction of the Aemilia basilica is undertaken. In Macedonia, Perseus (179-168 BC) succeeded his father, Philip V. Rome after undertaking an expedition to Istria in 178 BC annexed the region the following year. A Roman road (Aemilia) linked Bononia to Aquileia two years later. In 175, in Syria, Seleucus IV died and was succeeded by his brother Antiochus IV (175-164 BC) For the first time in the Annals of Rome, we have two plebeian consuls in 172 BC The Third Macedonian War began in 171 BC After initial successes in Greece, Perseus was finally defeated at the battle of Pydna in 168 BC by Paul-Émile. The kingdom of Macedonia disappears.
