Historical background

REPUBLIC OF EL SALVADOR

(since 1841)

El Salvador was subjugated in 1523 by the Spaniard Pedro de Alvarado. He founded San Salvador in 1528. In 1821, El Salvador declared independence from Spain and became part of the Mexican Empire of Iturbide and then became part of the Republic of Central America, including Guatemala, Honduras, Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica from 1825 to 1838. Final independence was proclaimed in 1841. Considered the richest of the Central American republics, El Salvador is a country of monoculture where 85% of production consists of coffee, which makes it dependent on world prices. Politically unstable, the country experienced a long series of dictatorships and saw the 20th century end with a guerrilla war known in particular by the assassination of Archbishop Roméro in 1980..
