DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO - BELGIAN CONGO

(1879-1960)

After crossing from east to west Africa, Stanley accepts the offer of King Leopold II of Belgium and begins an expedition to colonize the Congo in 1879-1882, concurrently with France. In 1885, Leopold II is recognized sovereign personal as the Congo Free State. The pacification of the country, the fight against slavery and the economic enhancement quickly exceed the personal resources of the king and annexed the Congo in 1908 by Belgium. During the next half-century, Belgium continues the economic enhancement of Congo with rubber, minerals such as copper or diamonds. Independence was proclaimed in 1960 by King Baldwin I in Leopoldville, Belgian Congo becomes the Democratic Republic of Zaire.
