Historical background

REPUBLIC OF UGANDA

(1962-)

Uganda has been a British protectorate since 1894. Crops are favored, notably cotton and coffee, while European immigration remains limited. The end of the 1950s saw the formation of two political parties while a coalition government was set up in 1962 and the country gained independence. In 1971, a military coup allowed General Amin Dada to come to power. A ruthless dictator, he proved to be an ardent Muslim and a radical opponent of Zionism. Ousted from power in 1979, he was replaced by different presidents who succeeded each other while sporadic unrest broke out. In 1986, President Musewemi restored some credibility to the state while measures to try to stem the serious economic crisis were taken. Measures in favor of democratization have been taken since 1992.
