Jean Baillon fut maire de Rennes de 1743 à 1757 et Sénéchal de Rennes, Intendant de la ville de La Rochelle, Dijon et Lyon.

Condate of the Redones, the city became an important crossroads under the Romans. In the 9th century, the counts of Rennes united Brittany and became dukes of Brittany. The Parliament of Brittany was established in Rennes in 1561, until the end of the Old Regime, it will show its independence. The city also receives the University of Brittany in 1735. The city had more than 210,000 inhabitants at the 1999 census.
