Condate of the Redones, the city became an important crossroads under the Romans. In the 9th century, the counts of Rennes united Brittany and became dukes of Brittany. The Parliament of Brittany was established in Rennes in 1561, until the end of the Old Regime, it will show its independence. The city also receives the University of Brittany in 1735.
