Commentary
Since the reign of Napoleon I, the various Ministers of Finance, as well as general engravers, directors of the Paris Mint workshop, and private engravers have been trying to improve the production of copper coins. In the middle of the 19th century, Louis XIII dozens from the 1640 reform, as well as Louis XIV liards, and even Henri III double and deniers tournois, were still in circulation. From 1839 onward, there was a broad reflection and an attempt at a general overhaul of the bronze coins prior to the Revolution to replace them with a modern and adequate coinage. In fact, it would take another thirteen years before the first 10-centime coins appeared, and another year for the 5, 2, and 1-centime coins bearing the image of Napoleon III.
