Commentary

The goal of this Quantitative Catalogue is to collect and to present, in a standardized form, all the die-studies carried out on Hellenistic coinages from the beginning of the 20th c. to 1993. For each coinage, this Catalogue offers a detailed chart of the study of the obverse dies. This chart is preceded by the main characteristics of the coinage (description, dating, weight, die-axis and reference publication), and is followed by data relevant to the volume of the issue: the number of obverse and reverse-dies, the number of coins, the ratio between the number of coins and the number of obverse-dies as well as two estimates of the original number of obverse dies.

The main aim of this catalogue is to create a tool which will allow numismatists to view their specific studies of a mint or an issue in a wider context, by asking relevant economic questions such as the relative size of the coinage studied. Incidentally, this Catalogue should allow anyone who wishes to classify a collection of Hellenistic coins to quickly inform themselves on the existence or absence of a monograph related to the issue that he is interested in. It goes without saying that, for the collector, this Quantatitive catalogue will provide a condensed reference work about the rarity of different coin issues. Some 329 different coin issues -all illustrated- are examined in this book (i.e. 46,777 coins and 11,709 different obverse dies), along with six appendices, one index and a bibliography..
