Obverse description : Monogramme de Raoul (RODOLFVS).

Reverse legend : SCI DIO/NVSN, (D EN FORME DE DELTA).
Reverse description : en deux lignes contenues entre trois lignes de grènetis, sous et sur un groupe de trois besants posés en triangle.
Reverse translation : (Saint-Denis, monastère).
Commentary
Monnaie de la plus grande rareté semblant inédite. Ce type monétaire se rapproche de celui de Charles le Simple de Saint-Denis, avec la légende bilinéaire au revers encadrée de deux groupes de trois points. Dans le champ du droit, nous trouvons non pas le monogramme CAROLVS de Charles, mais le monogramme de Raoul (RODOLFVS). Le revers avec les deux groupes de trois points posés en triangle se retrouve également sur la série des deniers de Saint-Denis d’Hugues le Grand (Trésors monétaires XXVIII, n° 3, p. 123) puis d’Hugues Capet (Idem, n° 120 et suiv., p. 125-126).
Coin of the greatest rarity, seemingly unprecedented. This monetary type is similar to that of Charles the Simple of Saint-Denis, with the bilinear legend on the reverse framed by two groups of three dots. In the obverse, we find not the monogram CAROLVS of Charles, but the monogram of Raoul (RODOLFVS). Historical background

Raoul is the son of Richard le Justicier, Duke of Burgundy. He married Emma, sister of Hugh the Great, daughter of Robert of France. On the death of Robert I of France at the Battle of Soissons in 923, his son-in-law Raoul was elected king while Charles III the Simple was arrested and dismissed. He must face the rise of the Normans whose king, Rollo, received Normandy at the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911. Raoul must face the rise in power of Guillaume Longue Epée, Duke of Normandy, and Hugh, Count of Vermandois. He died in 936, without posterity.
