Commentary
While the gold content of ELA coins is low, the weight of our triens is exactly average; the two examples in the BN collection weigh 1.27 and 1.29 grams. Our coin belongs to the ELA mint. This is the first mint whose name has an Anglo-Saxon sound. It is also the first to be represented in collections by more than 5 examples; J. Lafaurie counted 16 examples in 1996. Coins signed ELA have a fine gold content that drops sharply, varying between 60 and 46%, but which was raised by its successors to around 55-60% (see RN 1996, pages 199-200).
