Triens sur un flan court et épais, assez fruste au droit mais avec de beaux reliefs au revers. Patine très claire, un peu cristallisée

Commentary


Ce type de triens pourrait facilement être confondu avec le type IX au nom de DVTTA ; le style du droit et du revers sont les mêmes mais la légende de revers varie. Cet exemplaire est typique de cette série, tant par son style que par le métal. A titre d’exemple, le B. 4965 (= Prou 1130) ne contient que 20,9%, 74,3% d’argent et 4,8% de cuivre.
Le revers de notre monnaie semble avoir été frappé avec le même coin que les n° 105 (Castro 1441) et 107 (commerce 1961) de l’étude de J. Lafaurie.
This type of triens could easily be confused with type IX in the name of DVTTA; the style of the obverse and reverse are the same but the reverse legend varies. This example is typical of this series, both in style and metal. For example, B. 4965 (= Prou 1130) contains only 20.9%, 74.3% silver and 4.8% copper. The reverse of our coin seems to have been struck with the same die as nos. 105 (Castro 1441) and 107 (commerce 1961) in J. Lafaurie's study

Historical background


QUENTOVIC (WICVS IN PONTIO)

(7th century)

Jean Lafaurie, in his article in the Revue Numismatique of 1996, takes stock of knowledge on this coinage of Wicus. As early as the 17th century, Quentovic, the Roman port located at the mouth of the Canche, was proposed. In the 19th century, "a disappeared place near Etaples" (Pas-de-Calais), was proposed, while this town is located in the Boulonnais on the right bank of the mouth of the river. Wicus in Pontio is however located in Ponthieu. The oldest mention of Quentovic dates back to 720. One hundred and twenty-two coins have been listed by J. Lafaurie.
