Commentary


Les triens d’ALDINVS sont assez rares, avec seulement dix exemplaire de recensés par J. Lafaurie. Cet exemplaire semble avoir être des mêmes coins que les n° 26-28 et de même coin de droit que le n° 29. Le n° 27 (= MEC. 471 provient de la collection Dissard dispersée en 1930).
La légende est censée être ALDONO MONIT, mais ce coin de droit semble plutôt avoir ALAINO MONIT. Il est intéressant de noter que le revers du n° 29 a une croix cantonnée de quatre globule, ce qui introduit la série au nom de DONNA.
The ALDINVS trienniums are quite rare, with only ten examples recorded by J. Lafaurie. This example seems to have the same dies as nos. 26-28 and the same obverse die as no. 29. No. 27 (= MEC. 471 comes from the Dissard collection dispersed in 1930). The legend is supposed to be ALDONO MONIT, but this obverse die seems to have ALAINO MONIT instead. It is interesting to note that the reverse of no. 29 has a cross cantoned with four globules, which introduces the series with the name DONNA

QUENTOVIC (WICVS IN PONTIO)

(7th century)

Jean Lafaurie, in his article in the Revue Numismatique of 1996, takes stock of knowledge on this coinage of Wicus. As early as the 17th century, Quentovic, the Roman port located at the mouth of the Canche, was proposed. In the 19th century, "a disappeared place near Etaples" (Pas-de-Calais), was proposed, while this town is located in the Boulonnais on the right bank of the mouth of the river. Wicus in Pontio is however located in Ponthieu. The oldest mention of Quentovic dates back to 720. One hundred and twenty-two coins have been listed by J. Lafaurie.
