Commentary

Historical background

PROVINS (PREVUNDA SILVA) - Seine-et-Marne

(6th century)

The name of the locality is attested in the forms Pre(vu)nda silva (implied sylva, or "forest", to evoke a "deep, thick forest"), Castris pruvenis in the 9th century ("Castle of Profunda") . Indeed, it seems that the name Provins comes from the Latin word profundis (deep, thick). In the year 485 and after his victory at Soissons, Clovis seized the Roman castrum of Provins. Already showing a certain importance, from the beginning of the 9th century, Charlemagne sent his missi dominici there. Another proof of a major role: Provins strikes its own coin (the denier provinois)..
