Historical background

PROVENCE - COUNTY OF PROVENCE - CHARLES II OF ANJOU

(1285-1309)

Charles II (1254-1309) is the son of Charles I of Anjou and Béatrice de Provence. When his father died, he was taken prisoner by the King of Aragon, Peter III, who freed him for a very large ransom. He is Count of Anjou, of Maine, King of Naples. He was unable to recover Sicily, lost in 1282 after the Sicilian Vespers, continued his father's policy, conquered Durazzo in Albania and secured the throne of Hungary for his son Charles Martel (1271-1295). His other son Robert (1277-1343) ascended the throne of Naples on his death in 1309. He had left the county of Maine to his cousin and son-in-law Charles de Valois in 1290.
