Historical background

PROVENCE - COUNTY OF PROVENCE - RAYMOND BÉRANGER V

(1209-1245)

Raymond-Béranger V of Aragon (1198-1245) is the son of Alphonse II of Aragon, Count of Provence, and Gersende de Sabran. In 1209, he succeeded his father in the county of Provence and, in 1220, married Béatrice de Savoie (+1266) with whom he had four daughters: Marguerite (1221-1295), who married Louis IX; Éléonore (1222-1291), who married Henry III of England; Sancie, who was the second wife of Richard, King of the Romans; finally Béatrice (1234-1267) who inherited from her father in 1245 and brought Provence as a dowry to Charles de France (1226-1285), brother of Louis IX.
