Exemplaire sur un flan mince, ovale et large, bien centré des deux côtés avec les grènetis visibles. Buste tout à fait inhabituel. Usure importante, mais parfaitement lisible et identifiable. Patine vert foncé avec des reflets métalliques

Obverse description : Buste radié, casqué et cuirassé de Probus à gauche, vu de trois quarts en avant, tenant de la main droite une haste posée sur l'épaule et un bouclier de la amin gauche (E1).
Obverse translation : “Virtus Probi Augusti”, (La Vertu de Probus Auguste).

Reverse description : Virtus (la Vertu), casqué en habit militaire, debout à gauche, tenant une haste de la main gauche et s'appuyant sur un bouclier de la main droite.

Commentary


Poids très léger. Sans argenture superficielle. La cuirasse est ornée de l’égide et de la tête de Méduse. Bouclier clouté. Semble inédit et non répertorié. Manque à tous les ouvrages de référence. Un seul exemplaire recensé dans l’ouvrage de Jean Guillemain sur le trésor de La Venèra provenant d’une vente Hirsch, mai 1996, n° 1154.
Very light weight. No surface silver plating. The breastplate is decorated with the aegis and the head of Medusa. Studded shield. Appears unpublished and unlisted. Missing from all reference works. A single example listed in Jean Guillemain's work on the treasure of La Venèra from a Hirsch sale, May 1996, no. 1154

PROBUS

Probus was born on August 19, 232 in Sirmium. He led a brilliant military career during the reigns between Valerian I and Tacitus. Commander of the army of the East on the death of Tacitus, he was immediately proclaimed emperor and easily triumphed over Florian, who was assassinated. The situation is serious. The Rhine-Danubian limes gave way under the pressure of the Germanic invasions. Probus restores peace in Gaul, in Germania then in Rhaetia where he inflicts a severe defeat on the Germanic peoples, in Thrace where he crushes the Sarmatians and the Scythians, in Asia Minor which he cleans of looters and Pamphylian pirates, finally in Africa where he ends the incursions of the Blemmyes. In 280, he signed peace with Vahram II, Sassanid monarch. He must face the usurpations of Saturnin, Bonose and Proculus. Probus, having triumphed over all his adversaries, returned to Rome in 281 and celebrated his victories. Before preparing a new expedition against the Sassanids, he fell under the blows of his own soldiers at Sirmium in 282.
