Historical background

PRINCIPALITY OF CHATEAU-REGNAULT - FRANCIS OF BOURBON-CONTI

(1605-1614)

François de Bourbon was born on August 19, 1558 at the Château de la Ferté-sous-Jouarre, to Louis I and Éléonore de Roye. In 1581 at the Louvre, he first married Jeanne de Coëme (deceased in 1601) and, in 1605 at the Château de Meudon, in second marriage, Louise-Marguerite de Lorraine (1588-1631), daughter of the Duke of Guise. He is the first Duke of Conti and the first sovereign prince. Without descendants (his daughter Marie died in 1610, an illegitimate son, Nicolas), his title passed to his great-nephew Armand, brother of the Grand Condé. Opponent of the Duke of Guise, he chose the camp of Henri de Navarre during the Wars of Religion. In 1589, he signed the declaration of the Princes who recognized Henri IV. He also accompanied the latter in 1590 at the Battle of Ivry. He died on August 3, 1614 in Paris. François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, is also Prince of Château-Regnault thanks to his marriage to Louise-Marguerite de Lorraine.
