Historical background

PRINCESS MATHILDE

(26/05/1820-2/01/1904)

Mathilde Bonaparte, known as "Princess Mathilde", is the daughter of Jérôme Bonaparte, the youngest brother of Napoleon and Princess Catherine of Württemberg. Born in Trieste, she was brought up in Rome and Florence. She almost married the future Napoleon III at the age of 16, but the scuffle in Strasbourg (1836) broke off the engagement. She returned to live in Paris and, under the Second Empire and then after 1870, she held a salon which was one of the main meetings of the literary and artistic world..
