Commentary

This token was struck after 1665 but is already old and does not bear a hallmark. Théophraste Renaudot, born in 1586 in Loudun (current department of Vienne) and died on October 25, 1653 in Paris, was a French journalist, doctor and philanthropist. He is the founder of advertising and the French press through his two creations of the Bureau d'adresse (1629) and the Gazette, a weekly newspaper (May 30, 1631). Physician of the king, he was named \\\"commissioner for the poor of the kingdom.\\\" For more information, refer to his Wikipedia page at http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Th%C3%A9ophraste_Renaudot . It is exceptional for a token to bear the portrait of the character and it is probably the medical tradition of the deans which is taken up here

Historical background

PRESS

The press was born in the 17th century thanks to the printing press and the development of communications. In 1631, Théophraste Renaudot launched his weekly gazette called "Gazette de France" initially protected by Richelieu. The first French daily appeared in 1771 but the great development of the press took place during the revolution (350 titles appeared in 1789). Stifled under Napoleon I, the press then reappeared and became popular under Louis-Philippe I, when serial novels appeared. In 1868, a liberal law on the press allowed the emergence of many titles, some of which still exist (Le Temps later became Le Monde or Le Figaro).
