Historical background

FIRST FRENCH EMPIRE. Napoléon Emperor crowned with laurel - French Empire

(18/05/1804-6/04/1814)

Napoleon I (1768-1821) was at the height of his power in 1809 but Pope Pius VII excommunicated him on June 12. In response, the emperor had the sovereign pontiff removed and interned on July 6. On April 22, it is the formation of the fifth coalition and a lightning campaign of Napoleon in Austria with the victories of Eckmühl, Essling and especially Wagram (July 6). Austria signs the Treaty of Vienna on October 22 and gives up to France, Carniola, Carinthia and Croatia which, with Dalmatia and Istria form the Illyrian provinces. Rome is also attached to the Empire. This same year, Chateaubriand publishes the Martyrs or the Triumph of the Christian religion.
