Commentary
Rare in bronze, more easily found in silver. Marie-Louise is the daughter of Francis I, Emperor of Austria. Napoleon I, who had just triumphed at Wagram, had demanded her hand as a condition of peace with Austria. She was received enthusiastically in France, as this medal shows. Their marriage took place in Paris on April 2, 1810, and she gave birth to the King of Rome the following year. After the defeat of Napoleon I, she joined her father and remained in Schönbrunn, from where she liberally managed the duchies of Parma, Piacenza, and Guastalla, whose lifelong sovereignty had been granted to her.
