Sébastien is the son of Jean III (1521-1557) and the grandson of Charles Quint by his mother, Jeanne. He was born on January 20, 1554. On the death of his father, he was under the regency of Catherine and Cardinal Henri. Sebastian's personal government began on January 20, 1568.
