Historical background

KINGDOM OF PORTUGAL - SANCHO I

(1185-03/27/1211)

Sancho I was born in 1153 or 1154 in Coimbra from the union of Alphonse I and Mathilde of Savoy. He married Douce d'Aragon. In 1185, on the death of his father, he became king of Portugal, with Coimbra as its capital. In 1191 he succeeded in conquering Silves, a southern city of great economic and administrative importance, but the Moors succeeded in recapturing the city. He died on March 27, 1211 and was buried in the Monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra.
