Ce type monétaire fut créé par la loi du 10 juin 1555. Il fut frappé à Lisbonne et Porto. Ceux frappés à Porto, comme cet exemplaire, sont de la plus grande rareté.
This type of coin was created by the law of June 10, 1555. It was minted in Lisbon and Porto. Those minted in Porto, like this example, are extremely rare.

PORTUGAL - JOHN III

(1521-1557)

John was born in Lisbon in 1502. He became King of Portugal in 1521 and succeeded his father Manuel I. He died in 1557 in Lisbon. Large-scale trade was developed during his reign and the first European post in China was opened in Macau in 1557. None of the nine children he had with Catherine of Austria survived him. His grandson Sebastian succeeded him in 1557.
