Historical background

PORTUGAL - KINGDOM OF PORTUGAL - JOHN I THE GOOD

(1385-14/08/1433)

John I, the natural son of Peter I the justiciar, was born in Lisbon in 1357. His half-brother Ferdinand I died in 1383 while he was grand prior of the order of Aviz. Under pressure from the Portuguese people, he was proclaimed governor and defender of the kingdom to the detriment of his half-sister Beatrice who had married John I of Castile. John I was crowned King of Portugal in 1385. John I of Castile attempted to recover Portugal in vain and was defeated at the Battle of Aljubarrota (August 14, 1385). In 1387 he married the daughter of Jean de Gand. His reign was marked above all by a strengthening of ties with England, in particular following the Treaty of Windsor signed in 1386. He died in Lisbon on August 14, 1433, leaving the throne to his son, Edward I..
