Le traité de Tordesillas est un traité international établi le 7 juin 1494 pour établir le partage du Nouveau Monde entre les deux nouvelles puissances coloniales, avec pour ligne de partage un méridien nord-sud localisé à 370 lieues (1 770 km) à l'ouest des îles du Cap-Vert. Il est ratifié par le roi Ferdinand II d'Aragon et la reine Isabelle Ire de Castille pour l’Espagne et par le roi Jean II pour le Portugal.
