Commentary


Cet exemplaire présente une contremarque, ou plutôt une gravure en creux au niveau de la tête de Louis Ier. Une tête féminine coiffée d’un bonnet phrygien à gauche est représentée comme un symbole républicain. La monnaie a pu être regravée entre 1890 et 1910 par des partisans d’une “République du Portugal”.
This example has a countermark, or rather a hollow engraving, at the level of the head of Louis I. A female head wearing a Phrygian cap on the left is represented as a republican symbol. The coin may have been re-engraved between 1890 and 1910 by supporters of a “Republic of Portugal”.
