Septième pièce de 2 Euro commémorative circulante du Portugal. Pièce commémorant le “500ème anniversaire de la naissance de Fernão Mendes Pinto” .
Après la 2,5 Euro Capelo et Ivens l’INCM, la Monnaie portugaise, rend hommage en 2011 à un autre explorateur portugais, Fernão Mendes Pinto (1511-1583).
La vie de Fernão Mendes Pinto fut des plus mouvementées. Il fut tour à tour trafiquant, pirate, mercenaire, esclave, explorateur, missionnaire jésuite au Japon. Il voyagera en Abyssinie, Arabie, Inde, Malaga, Sumatra, Java, Siam, Tonkin, Chine et Japon...
A son retour au Portugal, il retraça ses aventures dans un livre « Peregrinação » (Pérégrination). Celui-ci fut publié à titre posthume en 1614 après avoir été passé au crible de l’Inquisition.

Seventh circulating commemorative 2 Euro coin from Portugal. Coin commemorating the “500th anniversary of the birth of Fernão Mendes Pinto”. After the 2.5 Euro Capelo and Ivens, the INCM, the Portuguese Mint, paid tribute in 2011 to another Portuguese explorer, Fernão Mendes Pinto (1511-1583). Fernão Mendes Pinto’s life was one of the most eventful. He was in turn a trafficker, pirate, mercenary, slave, explorer, Jesuit missionary in Japan. He traveled to Abyssinia, Arabia, India, Malaga, Sumatra, Java, Siam, Tonkin, China and Japan... Upon his return to Portugal, he recounted his adventures in a book “Peregrinação” (Peregrination). This was published posthumously in 1614 after being scrutinized by the Inquisition.
