Commentary

Suite à la mort de Ferdinand Ier du Portugal, la couronne doit revenir à la princesse Béatrice épouse de Jean Ier, roi de Castille. Jean, grand-maître de l'ordre d'Aviz et fils illégitime de Pierre Ier du Portugal se proclame roi. Peu après Jean Ier de Castille envahit la Portugal. Nuno Álvares Pereira (1360-1431) est le Connétable du Portugal. Il commande les 6.000 hommes des troupes portugaises et anglaises qui battent les 30.000 castillans à la Bataille d’Aljubarrota. Cette victoire éteint les prétentions de la Castille et légitime la Maison d’Aviz au trône du Portugal.
Following the death of Ferdinand I of Portugal, the crown was to revert to Princess Beatrice, wife of John I, King of Castile. John, Grand Master of the Order of Aviz and illegitimate son of Peter I of Portugal, proclaimed himself king. Shortly after, John I of Castile invaded Portugal. Nuno Álvares Pereira (1360-1431) was Constable of Portugal. He commanded the 6,000 Portuguese and English troops who defeated the 30,000 Castilians at the Battle of Aljubarrota. This victory extinguished Castile's claims and legitimized the House of Aviz to the throne of Portugal.
