Commentary

Historical background

PORTO VEDIRI - PORT-SAINT-PERE (LOIRE ATLANTIQUE)

(6th - 7th century)

In a communication, Mr. Longnon gives his opinion that Porto Vediri or Veteri seems to him to be the same place as Portus Vetraria mentioned in a diploma of Sigebert II. Of the two forms Porto Veteri and Porto Vidrari, it is likely that the second is the oldest. Mr. Longnon identified Portus Vetraria with Port-Saint-Père, relying on the fact that Portus Vetraria, in the quoted diploma, is said to be "super fluvio Taunuco" and that Port Saint-Père is on the Tenu, otherwise says the Achenau, a tributary of the Loire. Port-Saint-Père is located near Lake Grand-Lieu, 25 km south-west of Nantes and 30 km east of Pornic. The name of Port-Saint-Père comes from the Latin Portus Sancti Petri: Port of Saint Pierre.
