Obverse description : Un fond ligné est entouré d’un ovale fait de point et de tiret. Suspendu à ce cercle deux rubans retiennent un encart ovale décoré d’un trophée. Celui-ci est fait d’un carquois et d’un flambeau en sautoir.

Reverse description : Un fond ligné est entouré d’un ovale fait de point et de tiret. Suspendu à ce cercle deux rubans retiennent un encart ovale décoré d’un trophée. Celui-ci est fait d’un carquois et d’un flambeau en sautoir.

Cet exemplaire, en forme de rectangle aux bords arrondis, s’ouvre et permet de placer une monnaie 20 francs Or (diamètre : 22,5 mm) et une monnaie de 10 francs or (20 mm).
L’intérieur du couvercle présente le motif de l’avers en négatif, les emplacements pour mettre les pièces sont guillochés et perlés formant un motif de fleur. Le pourtour est cranté.
On note entre les deux emplacements un décor de rinceau.
Il y a également divers poinçons : Deux têtes de sanglier et un losange sur le bouton poussoir .

The inside of the lid features a negative image of the obverse design. The coin slots are guilloché and beaded, forming a floral motif. The rim is notched. A scrollwork decoration is visible between the two slots. Various hallmarks are also present: two boars' heads and a lozenge on the push button.

From the Middle Ages until the middle of the 19th century, deniers, écus, and then the first francs and centimes, were carried in purses, alms pouches, or small leather change purses, often attached to the belt. When, in the second half of the 19th century, the Second Empire put into circulation more than one hundred million 20-franc gold coins minted with the image of Louis Napoleon III, it was necessary to create a safe and practical system for storing and individually transporting these precious coins. The craftsmen imagined the manufacture of a sort of coin box, which took the name of coin box, then gold holder, and quickly transformed into Louis holder, the first name of the Emperor, but also a reminder of the first gold Louis created at the end of the reign of Louis XIII in 1641.
