Obverse description : Dans un rectangle a pan coupé composé de fleurs stylisées géométriques, le tout est sommé d’une fleur d’où pend une guirlande de feuillages.
Reverse

Reverse description : On note cinq cannelures, trois d’entre elles sont décorées de fleurs au bout de tiges pendantes.

Cet exemplaire, de forme de rectangle arrondi, s’ouvre et permet de placer un Louis d’or (diamètre : 22,5 mm) et une pièce de 10 francs or (20mm)
Les emplacements pour les pièces sont guillochés formant un motif discret de rosace.
On note divers poinçons : sur l’anneau un cygne et un autre poinçon rectangulaire présentant un charançon, que l’on retrouve également en deux endroits sur la tranche inférieure de l’étui ; entre les deux emplacements la mention B.S.G.D.G..
Dimensions: 54 x 31 mm (excluding the bail). This example, rectangular in shape with rounded corners, opens to hold a Louis d'or (diameter: 22.5 mm) and a 10-franc gold coin (20 mm). The coin slots are guilloché, forming a subtle rosette pattern. Several hallmarks are present: a swan on the ring and another rectangular hallmark depicting a weevil, which also appears in two places on the lower edge of the case; between these two slots is the inscription BSGDG.

From the Middle Ages until the middle of the 19th century, deniers, écus, and then the first francs and centimes, were carried in purses, alms pouches, or small leather change purses, often attached to the belt. When, in the second half of the 19th century, the Second Empire put into circulation more than one hundred million 20-franc gold coins minted with the image of Louis Napoleon III, it was necessary to create a safe and practical system for storing and individually transporting these precious coins. The craftsmen imagined the manufacture of a sort of coin box, which took the name of coin box, then gold holder, and quickly transformed into Louis holder, the first name of the Emperor, but also a reminder of the first gold Louis created at the end of the reign of Louis XIII in 1641.
