Cet exemplaire, en forme de rectangle s’ouvre et permet de placer une monnaie 20 francs Or (diamètre : 22,5 mm) et une monnaie de 10 francs or (20 mm).
Les emplacements pour mettre les pièces sont guillochés formant un motif de rosace.
Mention 9 suivi de .375 sur le pourtour de chacun des emplacements prévu pour les monnaies, ainsi que sur l’anneau de suspension. Mention G&G suivi d’un poinçon d’orfèvre en forme de blason avec les chiffres 9 et .375 et un troisième malheureusement illisible, sur l’intérieur du couvercle. Un poinçon trèfle est visible sur le rebord d’un des emplacements et sur la bélière.

The coin slots are guilloché-engraved with a rosette pattern. The numbers 9 followed by .375 are inscribed around the edge of each coin slot, as well as on the suspension ring. The inscription G&G, followed by a maker's mark in the shape of a shield with the numbers 9 and .375, and a third mark that is unfortunately illegible, are found on the inside of the lid. A clover-shaped hallmark is visible on the rim of one of the coin slots and on the suspension loop.

From the Middle Ages until the middle of the 19th century, deniers, écus, and then the first francs and centimes, were carried in purses, alms pouches, or small leather change purses, often attached to the belt. When, in the second half of the 19th century, the Second Empire put into circulation more than one hundred million 20-franc gold coins minted with the image of Louis Napoleon III, it was necessary to create a safe and practical system for storing and individually transporting these precious coins. The craftsmen imagined the manufacture of a sort of coin box, which took the name of coin box, then gold holder, and quickly transformed into Louis holder, the first name of the Emperor, but also a reminder of the first gold Louis created at the end of the reign of Louis XIII in 1641.
