Commentary

Countermark on the reverse. For this type, Mr. Crawford noted an estimate of forty-two obverse dies and forty-seven reverse dies for five varieties. This type is rarer than general works suggest. Mr. Crawford noted only fourteen examples from the treasures of Alvignano (3 ex.), Avvetrana (2 ex.), Vigatto (1 ex.), Maillé (2 ex.), Bourgueil (1 ex.), Gallignano (1 ex.), Terranova (3 ex.) and Aquileia (1 ex.)

Historical background

POMPEY THE YOUNGER

(79-45 BC)

Pompey the Younger (79-45 BC) was Pompey's eldest son. After the assassination of his father, he seized the Balearic Islands and established himself in Spain where the remnants of the troops beaten at Thapsus in 46 BC joined him. Caesar decided to confront Pompey the Younger. The battle takes place at Munda on March 17, 45 BC. Pompey the Younger is defeated, captured and executed, while his younger brother, Sextus, manages to escape.
