Historical background

POLAND - GRAND DUCHY OF WARSAW - ZAMOSC

(1813)

Zamosc belonged to Austria since the partition of 1795. The Poles seized the city in 1809. It was a fortress placed on the Wiepz, in the circle of Lublin. In 1812, the remnants of the Polish troops of the Grande Armée locked themselves in the city, pursued by the Cossacks. The defense of the city was entrusted to General Hauke who only capitulated on December 13, 1813.
