Au nombre de 48, les commissaires au Châtelet étaient des officiers de police dont la fonction était très large : surveiller les marchés, l'exercice des scellés, recevoir les plaintes des victimes, apposer des scellés après décès, recevoir les comptes de communauté de tutelle, de curatelle, de gestion de sociétés. Ils s'assemblaient deux fois par semaine au Châtelet.
