Historical background

POLEMO II AND BRITANNICUS

(55-57)

It was Marc Antoine who reconstituted part of the Kingdom of Pontus of Mithridates VI (120-63 BC) for the benefit of Polemon I in 36 BC. Octave confirmed his possessions to him in 30 BC. He married Dynamis, the daughter of Mithridates VI of Pontus, widow of Asander (47-17 BC), king of the Bosphorus. It was finally Pythodoris, another wife of Polemon I, who succeeded her in 8 BC. Then it was Antonia Tryphænea, daughter of Polemon I, who succeeded her mother in 22. From 38, she associated her son Polemon II with the throne. Antonia died in 49. Polemon also received the kingdom of the Bosphorus from Caligula. In 64, Nero had Polemon deposed, who retired to Cilicia. His kingdom became a Roman province.
