Historical background

POLAND - SIGISMUND I THE OLD

(1506-1/04/1548)

Sigismund was born in 1467. He is the son of Casimir IV Jagiellon and the brother of Alexander I, King of Poland. He was commissioned in 1506 to govern Lithuania and then, in 1507, was elected King of Poland. He married Bonne Sforza, daughter of the Duke of Milan Jean-Galeas II, and made Krakow a center of the Renaissance. He died in this city in 1548; his son Sigismund II Augustus succeeded him.
