Historical background

POLAND - LIVONIA - STEPHEN I BATHORY

(1575-1586)

In 1573, the Diet of Warsaw established an elective Polish monarchy. The Frenchman Henri de Valois was elected king of Poland in 1573, but as soon as he learned of the death of Charles IX, he fled from Poland to occupy the throne of France under the name of Henry III. The Prince of Transylvania, Étienne Bathory, was elected to replace Henri de Valois. He successfully fought Ivan the Terrible but died heirless in Grodno in 1586.
