Historical background

POLAND - KRAKOW

1815-1846

In 1815, the Congress of Vienna ratifies the partition of the Duchy of Warsaw in favor of Prussia and Russia. Of Poland, only the Free City of Krakow remains, a state reduced to the city of Krakow and its surroundings and placed under the tutelage of Prussia, Russia and Austria. Following the Polish uprising of 1830-1831, the autonomy of the city reduced. It was occupied from 1831 to 1845 by Austrian troops. The 1846 uprising was suppressed by Austrian soldiers and the Republic of Krakow was annexed to the Austrian Empire.
