Obverse

This coin is very rare, since those with ANE or AVE on the reverse generally bear on the obverse a ME under a cross and not the letters MN as on this example.

Historical background

POITOU - METALUS VICUS - MELLE (Deux-Sevres)

(late 7th - 8th centuries)

The Melle workshop, in the south-east of Deux-Sèvres, was important in the Carolingian period and seems to have been in operation from the Merovingian period. The silver-lead mines are still accessible and can be visited by a wide public.
