Commentary

This denier is very rare, since those with ANE or AVE on the reverse generally bear on the obverse an ME under a cross and not the letters MN. This type of coin is often found in Poitou-Charentes, the ME under the cross naturally brings to mind METVLLO (Melle) where silver-lead mines were exploited

Historical background

POITOU - METALUS VICUS - MELLE (Deux-Sevres)

(late 7th - 8th centuries)

The Melle workshop, in the south-east of Deux-Sèvres, was important in the Carolingian period and seems to have been in operation from the Merovingian period. The silver-lead mines are still accessible and can be visited by a wide public.
