Commentary

Traditionally, these deniers with the crossed E on the reverse are attributed to Paris, but without convincing arguments. Metallic analyses tend to prove that these coins were struck with silver from Melle... and that they would rather come from a local workshop.

Historical background

POITOU - METALUS VICUS - MELLE (Deux-Sevres)

(late 7th - 8th centuries)

The Melle workshop, in the south-east of Deux-Sèvres, was important in the Carolingian period and seems to have been in operation from the Merovingian period. The silver-lead mines are still accessible and can be visited by a wide public.
