Historical background

POITOU - COUNTY OF POITOU - ALPHONSE OF FRANCE

(1241-1271)

Alphonse de France (1220-1271) is the son of Louis VIII and Blanche de Castille. By his marriage in 1241 with Jeanne, daughter of the count of Toulouse, Raymond VII, he became the heir to the count's crown. When his father-in-law died in 1249, he inherited the county of Toulouse and the marquisate of Provence. His brother, Louis IX, gave him the prerogative of Poitou and the county of Riom which must return to the crown in the absence of descendants of Alphonse. Alphonse and his wife Jeanne died within eight days of each other in 1271. The counties of Poitou, Toulouse, Riom and the marquisate of Provence returned to the crown in the person of Philippe III le Bold.
